The mechanical surface packing is fitted in the groove of the retaining groove to form a seal on the adjacent surface. The metal surface is precision lapped. The lamp angle of the seal and housing is slightly different and the rubber ring slides to form a wedge to form a compressed profile that will load and damage the seal.
